Commitment to achieving Net Zero

The Distillery London Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline Year: 2022

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

This is the first year for the company to report emissions. First reporting period is 1st Jan 2022 - 31st Dec 2022. We used the Business Carbon Calculator by Normative for our figures.

Scope 1: Company Vehicles: we do not have any company vehicles, so there are no emissions from this category included in our emissions data.

Scope 2: Electricity: we lease our office and our electricity bill is included within our rent. The office uses solely electricity for lights, power and temperature control. We are in a shared building with other tenants. We need to find out more information from our landlord as to who supplies the electricity and how it is charged.

Scope 3: Category 4 & 9 Upstream and Downstream distribution: Our main distribution of goods includes office based materials/ food items and marketing items. We also utilise courier services for office based and video production purposes. When we have productions we hire crew who are sometimes required to drive. We also hire filming equipment that needs to be delivered using a van.

Category 5: Waste generated: We manage our own waste disposal via the council.

Category 6: Business travel: We have data on travel expenses through travel receipts.

Category 7: Employee Commuting: We do not have any firm data on how employees were travelling into the office. But will be taking steps to monitor this for our next report.

This is our first carbon footprint. In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets. We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 25 tCO2e by 2027. This is a reduction of 41%.

Emissions reduction targets

Carbon reduction projects

The following environmental management measures and projects have either been implemented since the 2022 baseline, or were already in place at baseline (detailed below).

  • Renting only one office space, which measures 72m2 to accommodate 15 staff members.

  • Switching off radiators in the office when the last person leaves and only switching on heating/ air conditioning when there are people in the office.

  • Setting the thermostat to between 19-21 degrees celsius.

  • Switching off electrical equipment at the plug when not in use (including computer equipment, monitors, televisions, wifi router, kettle, microwave).

  • Only purchasing office equipment (i.e. laptops and accessories) on a case by case basis, and recycle any equipment belonging to employees who have left the company.

  • Waste is recycled where possible (cardboard and plastic), using colour coded bins. We use Islington council for collecting our recycling and waste.

  • A cycle to work scheme is already in place to encourage employees to travel to work in a more environmentally friendly way. We are putting plans in place to monitor staff commuting modes of transport and if there is any way this can be improved on.

  • None of our employees travel to work by car.

  • We offer hybrid working with 3 days per week in the office and 2 days per week from home, and the office is closed on a Friday.

  • We use a travel company to book company travel and so can request greener alternatives when booking.

  • We have a green travel scheme in place for employees, which gives the option to utilise greener modes of transport rather than flying to or from a booked holiday, to obtain an extra holiday day.

  • On video production shoots we ask crew members to bring reusable water bottles and hot drink containers. We no longer provide single use drinks containers.

  • When a shoot is outside of London we request crew to travel by train where necessary, carpool, or hire local crew to reduce the amount of car travel.

Completed carbon reduction initiatives

Carbon reduction initiatives set for completion in 2024

  • We are employing an eco-friendly cleaner who uses electric vehicles, eco friendly synbiotic (chemical free) cleaning products, recycled toilet paper and towels to start in 2024.

  • Speaking to our landlord about switching to LED lighting in the office, draught proof/ seal windows to reduce use of heating, switching to a greener energy supplier.

  • Reducing business travel to essential only travel, working with the CEO and MD’s to discuss updating the business travel policy, and where possible holding meetings virtually.

  • Setting up an employee pledge program, which will be included into appraisals so that everyone in the company becomes responsible for helping to reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Organising environmental days where employees can volunteer in conservation projects.

  • Switching to recyclable coffee pods.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • Switching to a greener taxi and courier service - we currently use Addison Lee. We can request bicycle couriers for smaller packages.

  • Inquiring into a specific food waste recycling service to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, if possible.

  • Assessing the goods and services we purchase to see if there is any way this can be reduced and making sure the suppliers we use are also sustainability minded.

  • Signing up to SBTI to asssist with obtaining our target.

  • Certifying as a B-Corp.

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard4 and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting5 .

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard6 .

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
